Teresa Vivar is the founder and executive director of Lazos América Unida, a New Brunswick–based organization that supports young Mexican immigrants and their families. Vivar helps families navigate increasingly difficult U.S. immigration laws. A strong advocate for civic engagement, she stresses the importance of voting and political participation among new generations of Mexican Americans. Originally from Oaxaca, Mexico, and the oldest of 12 siblings, Vivar came to the United States to continue her studies and found her calling in New Brunswick, where she now works to empower her community.
