Mexican Migrants Launch Binational Day of Action, Warn: Representation Must Be Guaranteed and Chosen by the Community

Washington, D.C. – February 17, 2026. Mexican men and women living abroad carried out the first binational day of civic participation at legislative offices across Mexico, placing a direct message on the public agenda amid discussions of electoral reform: representation of the migrant community must be guaranteed, direct, and chosen by those who live outside the country.

The actions took place simultaneously in Sonora, Zacatecas, Morelos, Guanajuato, Mexico City, San Luis Potosí, and Puebla, marking a coordinated deployment that confirms the national organization of the Mexican community abroad.

Backed by social, academic, and community organizations that endorse the Declaration of Principles for Full Political Rights, the day of action was peaceful and symbolic in nature. Participants showed up with a single demand:

The mobilization was a preventive and civic action in response to possible changes to the electoral system, establishing a central principle: any reform must ensure that migrant representation is effective, direct, and determined by the community itself.

During the day of action, participants acknowledged the progress made on voting from abroad; however, they also emphasized that the ability to run for candidacies does not necessarily guarantee real representation. For the Mexican community abroad, democracy is strengthened when the rules are clear, transparent, and ensure that those who vote can directly choose who represents them.

The message was defined with political and legal clarity: representation is part of the full exercise of citizenship and cannot be left subject to indirect mechanisms.

Second phase: presence at consulates

Organizers announced that this first day of action marks the beginning of a series of binational actions. The second phase will take place at Mexican consulates in the United States, expanding direct participation by the migrant community and reinforcing the institutional and peaceful nature of the movement.
