Fuerza Migrante Praises Initiative to Achieve Representation for Mexican Immigrants in the Chamber

Fuerza Migrante, a binational, nonpartisan, nonprofit movement and organization focused on the economic, social, and educational empowerment of the community of Mexican origin in the United States, recognized the historic advance achieved through the constitutional reform initiative on electoral matters that incorporates, for the first time explicitly, migrant seats within the structural design of the Mexican Congress to represent Mexican immigrants living abroad.

The inclusion of eight seats reserved to represent Mexican immigrants established in the United States constitutes a significant step in the institutional recognition of a community made up of millions of Mexican men and women who maintain economic, social, and family ties with the country.

The Fuerza Migrante Binational Council emphasized that the reform elevates to the constitutional level the recognition of representation for Mexican immigrants, helping to safeguard the right to vote and be voted for from abroad and to consolidate the inclusion of Mexican citizens living outside national territory within the country's democratic design.

However, the organization warns that the approved design leaves certain matters pending, particularly the elimination of proportional representation in the Senate, which limits the possibility of incorporating Mexican immigrants as representatives in that chamber.
