Fuerza Migrante Welcomes Comprehensive Immigration Reform Bill by Senator Menéndez and Congresswoman Sánchez
Washington, D.C. February 18th, 2021
Fuerza Migrante warmly welcomes President Joe Biden’s comprehensive immigration reform plan, unveiled today and as he promised both during his campaign to the White House and in his inauguration address.
The proposed “US Citizenship Act of 2021” was introduced today by democratic Senator Robert Menéndez and Congresswoman Linda Sánchez, also a democrat, and one of several legislators with Mexican ancestry in Congress. It is the most ambitious plan to overhaul the United States’ immigration system in over three decades.
The introduction of the bill is the latest action taken by the Biden Administration on immigration issues, which include a set of Executive Orders to revert some of the cruel and draconian immigration policies of his predecessor.
The US Citizenship Act of 2021 “represents the progressive and inclusive vision that built the United States, and Fuerza Migrante has committed itself to working wholeheartedly with the Executive and Legislative branch of government, as well as with other civil society organizations, so that it is enacted into law”, the Binational Council of Fuerza Migrante stated.
The bill would extend legal status and citizenship to 11 million undocumented migrants, beneficiaries of TPS and the DACA program (Dreamers), and some workers, considered essential more than ever due to the COVID19 pandemic, as well as thousands of refugees under threat of being deported, among other measures.
Fuerza Migrante is convinced that the protection to these groups of people, among the most vulnerable in society, is key to America’s economic recovery. It is also an opportunity so that millions can fully contribute to the country and so that they can go about their lives without having to hide for fear of being deported.
Along with over 230 community leaders and other civil society organizations working with Mexican communities in the US, Fuerza Migrante has launched its nation-wide campaign “MexUnidosXlaReforma” (Mexicans United for Reform) to contribute and make sure the proposed legislation becomes law.
