and calls upon the Senate to protect Dreamers
New York, June18th, 2020
Fuerza Migrante welcomes today’s landmark decision by the United States Supreme Court that rejected President Donald Trump’s administration’s repeated attempts to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA), that have put the lives of about 700,000 beneficiaries in danger.
“Over the last three years those youngsters benefited by DACA have been living in the legal limbo derived from the White House attempts to end the DACA program without valid, reasoned and solid arguments. Therefore, we celebrate the migratory relief brought up by the Court’s ruling, and the fresh breathing room it brings to the program’s beneficiaries and their families”, the Binational Council of Fuerza Migrante stated.
The Supreme Court decision, after 7 months of deliberations, was possible because Chief Justice John G. Roberts, sided with the 4 liberal voices in the court, to provide “Dreamers” with a 5-4 victory. The ruling allows DACA recipients to live and work in the United States without fear of being deported. The United States istherefore, their home.
Fuerza Migrante reiterates its call to the White House to stop all attempts to upend the life of the DACA youngsters and other immigrants, and asks the U.S. Senate to pass legislation that permanently protects them, along the lines of the American Dream and Promise Act,already passed by the House of Representatives (H.R. 6).
Over 200,00 beneficiaries of DACA are ranking members of the so called “essential” workers in the fight against COVID-19, of which about 29,000 work in the health care industry.
